The Enforcement Directorate has levied a penalty of over 14 lakh rupees on Hurriyat Conference leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani for illegal possession of 10 thousand dollars in violation of foreign exchange law.

In a statement, the agency said, the foreign currency has also been confiscated as part of an order issued under the Foreign Exchange Management Act, FEMA.

The foreign currency was seized during an Income Tax raid at Geelani's residence in Srinagar's Hyderpora area in 2002.

Geelani heads the Hurriyat Conference and is based in Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar. The ED took up the case after taking cognisance of the Income Tax report and had also issued summons to Geelani to appear before it in Srinagar.
