The Election Commission held a meeting of Multi-Departmental Committee on Election Intelligence in New Delhi yesterday.

Speaking on the Occasion, Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora said, it is the constitutional mandate of the Commission to conduct free and fair elections. He said, conducting clean elections is now one of the biggest challenges in the democracy given the prevalent abuse of money power, particularly when it manifests in the inducement of voters.

Mr Arora said the Commission is determined to curb this menace and has issued detailed guidelines to monitor election expenditure incurred by candidates and political parties. He said, the expenditure monitoring mechanism has become stronger over a period of time and larger seizures have been made by the enforcement teams in successive elections.

Election Commissioners Ashok Lavasa and Sushil Chandra were also present on the occasion.
