Media has big role to play in enhancing India’s image on global stage: I7B secy

The significance of Indian media is far greater than what is reflected by the revenues it generates and the job it creates, Information and Broadcasting Secretary Amit Khare has said.

Delivering the keynote address of the 20th edition of FICCI FRAMES in Mumbai on Tuesday morning, Mr. Khare said, media has the ability to change people’s perceptions and has a big role to play in enhancing India’s image on the global stage.

Acknowledging that the Indian media and entertainment sector is led by private sector, the secretary said, the role of the government has been of a facilitator and not regulator. He added that self-regulation is best form of regulation.

Mr. Khare said that India needs to rethink its media policies as there is convergence of platforms and content and announced that the ministry is currently in discussion with stakeholders to draft a National Broadcast Policy.

He said, forums such as FICCI Frames are helpful in enabling interaction among various stakeholders engaged and interested in the sector.

Also present on the occasion, FICCI’s Vice President, Uday Shankar said that India is one of the most exciting markets for the Media and Entertainment sector, adding that the sector can play a crucial role in realizing national aspirations.

The FICCI-EY Knowledge Paper on the ‘Media and Entertainment industry in India’ and Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas Law Book were launched on the occasion.

The theme of the three-day conference is ‘FRAMES @ 20: Global Goes India’.
