Pakistan’s forces resorted to heavy shelling and firing in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday evening.

A Defence spokesperson told AIR the Pakistan troops started unprovoked firing which prompted the Indian Army to retaliate effectively.

They targeted Indian forward posts and villages along the Line of Control in Shahpur sector.

The intermittent exchange of fire was continuing when reports last came in. There was no report of any casualty from the Indian side so far.

Due to prevailing tension and subsequent increase in the number of ceasefire incidents for the last seven days, there had been two days’ lull along the Line of Control.

Earlier today, Pakistan forces had resorted to mortar shelling in Akhnoor sector in Jammu. Four civilians, including three members of a family, have been killed in Pakistan’s mortar shelling in Poonch district since Thursday.

Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat visited the area on Saturday. He reviewed operational preparedness of the forces and the current security situation along the LoC and the International Border.
