In an effort to stress on the use of advanced technology to meet the increasing demand of housing in the country caused by rapid urbanisation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has today declared the period from April 2019 to March 2020 as Construction-Technology year.

Addressing the Construction Technology India-2019 Expo-cum-Conference in New Delhi, Mr Modi said, the quality of house and space per home has improved during the NDA government's rule. He said the government is ensuring that houses have water, power, ujjawala connections and other such facilities.

Mr Modi said, the government has changed the face of the housing industry in the country and is committed to the affordable housing to all by 2022.

Prime Minister said, his government has already constructed one crore 30 lakh houses in the last four and a half years, while the previous government made only 25 lakh houses in its tenure.

Prime Minister said, GST in the construction sector has been lessened and in affordable housing, GST has been decreased to one per cent from eight per cent. He said the GST on the under-construction housing projects, has been decreased to five per cent from 12 per cent.

He said the government is encouraging disaster-resilient and energy-efficient construction. Mr Modi also sought private sector cooperation in the improvement of the real estate sector in the country.

In a reference to Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, who returned to India yesterday, Mr Modi said, the world is watching what India does. The Prime Minister said, the meaning of Abhinandan is now different from the earlier one which means a welcome.

AIR correspondent reports, the 2-day conference will identify proven, innovative and globally established technologies for use in the Indian context. Technology providers, researchers, start-ups, developers, academia, public sector agencies and other domain experts are participating in the event.

Proven technologies which are identified during the conference will be further invited to design and build lighthouse projects of nearly one thousand housing units each in Gujarat, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Tripura and Uttar Pradesh.
