Heavy rains cause havoc in northeastern regions of Australia

InAustralia, heavy rains have caused havoc in northeastern regions of thecountry, with one major river breaking 118-year-old floodwater records.

TheBureau of Meteorology today said Queensland's Daintree River rose to 12.6metres, a level not seen in over a century.

TheDaintree Rainforest received more than 300 millimetres of rain in just 24hours. Local authorities have warned that some residents in remote areas couldbe cut off for several days with no power or phone service.

The weather department said, the monsoonal conditions will not be easing anytime soon, with thunderstorms and rain forecast for the rest of the week.
