Jammu-Srinagar highway reopens partially for traffic

In Jammu & Kashmir, the strategic Srinagar Jammu national highway was partially reopened today after remaining closed for six consecutive days due to unfavourable road condition besides continuous shooting stones and landslides at several places along the highway for the last six days.

Traffic officials said that fresh shooting stones and landslides in Ramban and Banihal stretches yesterday besides slippery road condition on vulnerable road stretches remained main impediments in the road clearance operations to restore the traffic movement on the highway.

Yesterday, the shooting stones continued to hit many places in the Ramban district. Landslides again hit the highway in Gangroo, Anokhi Fall and Battery Chashma area yesterday.

The highway is the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with rest of the country that was closed on January 21 following heavy snowfall in the Jawahar Tunnel area that is called the Gateway to Kashmir. In addition, multiple landslides triggered by the incessant rains hit the road stretch between Banihal and Ramban over the past week.
