Maratha quota: Appointments put on hold till January 23

Maharashtra government has decided to keep on hold its recruitment process until January 23 when the Bombay High Court is scheduled to hear the Maratha reservation issue.

Government counsel V A Thorat on Wednesday assured the court that no new appointments will be made under the new legislation providing quota to the Maratha community.

The division bench of Chief Justice N H Patil and Justice M S Karnik was hearing a bunch of petitions challenging Maharashtra government’s decision to allot 16 per cent reservation to the Maratha community in jobs and education.

On whether the government was ready to make public the report submitted by the State Backward Class Commission recommending a reservation for Marathas, the government said it had some apprehensions about giving the report to lawyers.

State Advocate General Ashutosh Kumbhakoni said some portions of the report pertaining to the history of the Maratha community might cause social unrest.

Adjourning the matter, the bench asked the government to consider providing a truncated version of the report to lawyers.
