Mizoram: EC team holds discussions regarding current stand-off, measures for free & fair election
Election Commission
In Mizoram, the high level team of the Election Commission held discussions regarding the current stand-off and removal of the Chief Electoral Officer S. B. Shashank, as demanded by the NGO Coordination Committee in Aizawl today.
The Election Commission team, headed by Deputy Election Commissioner Sudeep Jain, held meeting with the representatives of the NGO coordination committee. They also discussed the measures for free and fair election in the State.
Additional CEO Ms Lalzarmwaii told media after the meeting, that final decision regarding transfer of CEO S. B. Shashank will be taken only by the Election Commission. She also said that arrangements will be made for Bru voters living in relief camps in Tripura to cast votes in polling stations of Mizoram.
The EC team also held meeting with the leaders of the Church. The present visit of the EC team took place following the agitations by NGOs in the State early this week protesting removal of the Principal Secretary (Home) Lalnunmawia Chuaungo. They were also demanding removal of state's Chief Electoral Officer and casting of votes by Bru displaced voters in Mizoram instead of transit camps in Tripura.
Today was also the last date of filing of nominations in the state for the polls scheduled on 28th of this month.
Till today, 208 candidates from various parties including Congress, Mizo National Front (MNF), BJP, ZPM and other parties filed nominations. Chief Minister and state Congress President Lal Thanhawla filed nominations for Champhai and Serchhip constituencies.
BJP President J. V. Hluna, MNF President Zoramthanga, and Lalduhoma, President of the Zoram Peoples Movement party also filed their nominations. Meanwhile, campaigning by parties has picked up across the state.
