Home Ministry today advised the Chandigarh Administration to exempt Sikh women from wearing helmets while driving two wheelers in the city and to follow Delhi government's notification in this regard.

An official release said, the move comes in response to a representation by Sikh bodies to Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

Following an amendment to the Delhi Motor Act in 1993 Delhi Government had issued a notification in 1999 making it optional for women either riding on pillion or driving a two-wheeler to wear a protective headgear.

The release said the rule was further amended in 2014 by replacing the word women with Sikh women.
