75% polling recorded in Nagaland, over 67% in Meghalaya


75 per cent polling has been recorded in Nagaland assembly elections while over 67 percent voter turnout has been registered in Meghalaya till 4 pm.

Briefing media in New Delhi, Deputy Election Commissioner, Sudeep Jain, said in Nagaland, the polling percentage in the last assembly elections, was over 90 percent. He said the polling was smoothly conducted in the state, barring some sporadic incidents.   

Deputy Election Commissioner, Chandra Bhushan Kumar said, in Meghalaya 89 percent voter turnout was registered in the last assembly elections. He said, the polling was completely peaceful in the state. 

The two states have a 60-member House each, but voting was held for 59 constituencies in both. 

In Meghalaya, the election has been countermanded in Williamnagar in the wake of the killing of NCP candidate Jonathone N Sangma in an IED blast, while in Nagaland, Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party Chief Neiphiu Rio has been declared elected unopposed from the Northern Angami-II constituency.

In Meghalaya, there are a total of 361 candidates are in the fray. A total of 32 women candidates are also contesting is this election. 

In Nagaland, a total of 195 candidates, including five women, are in the fray.

The counting of votes in both states will be held on Saturday along with Tripura.
