Heavy rains lash Mumbai

A red was sounded for Mumbai and neighbouring districts in Maharashtra as the monsoon arrived a day ahead of schedule.

Heavy rains have been lashing the maximum city, causing roads and
markets to be flooded and subways closed.

Train and bus services were also thrown out of gear.

The India Meteorological Department, IMD, issued a red for Mumbai and neighbouring districts like Thane, Palghar and Raigad, warning of “moderate to intense spells of rainfall over the next three to four hours”.

An orange has been sounded for the next four days.

The weather department also said Mumbai and its suburbs are likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall, or thunderstorms, over the next 24 to 48 hours.

An orange – also valid for the next four days – has been issued for Konkan districts.

A similar has been issued for Pune, Satara and Kolhapur districts in western parts of Maharashtra for Saturday and Sunday , and for Bhandara, Gondia and Gadchiroli districts in the Vidharbha region on Sunday.

Four Mumbai subways – Milan, Khar, Andheri and Malad – were
closed. Police said the subways were closed after being flooded by at
least two feet of water.

AIR Correspondent reports that the monsoon is expected to advance into the state and into Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, as well as Odisha and Bengal, over the next 48 hours.

Some parts of Mumbai and suburbs are witnessing spells of heavy rain even today.

But the intensity is less as compared to yesterday. Although due to heavy rains two storey house collapsed in Malad area of Mumbai last night and 11 people died in the mishap.

Spells of heavy rain are witnessed in neighbouring Thane and Palghar districts.

Crops were damaged in Yavatmal, Beed, Parbhani, and Dhule due to heavy rain on Wednesday.

In Yavatmal District very heavy rain was witnessed and the water started flowing over the bridges and in some parts the water from nearby nullahs entered the farmland and damaged the soil.

In Parbhani district under construction roads were washed away due to heavy rain.
