The COVID 19 infection continued to show an upward trend in Bangladesh as 2537 new corona positive cases were detected in the country on Wednesday. This is the highest number of cases in a single day since April 28.
The sample positivity rate also went up to 12.33 percent marking a slight increase from 12.12 percent recorded on Tuesday. Bangladesh recorded 36 deaths taking the death toll to 12,949 in the country.
Some districts of Bangladesh are showing very high infection levels. The bordering district of Satkhira reported close to 60 percent infection rate which was around 13 percent during the time of Eid. District administration is enforcing a strict lock down in such areas to contain the spread of the virus.
The Chinese ambassador to Bangladesh Li Jiming on Wednesday said during a programme in Dhaka that a ‘very pragmatic’ discussion was underway with Bangladesh for the procurement of COVID 19 vaccine. He also said that ‘encouraging progress’ has been made between the two countries over co-production of vaccines.
Meanwhile, the US has asked its citizens to avoid visiting Bangladesh as it falls in the category of high infection risk country. The US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in its latest travel advisory put Bangladesh at level 4 which indicates a very high risk of infection. However, travellers from Bangladesh are not barred from entering the US.
