Sensex down 52 points, Nifty ends at 15,740; Smallcap and Midcap surge

Indian equity benchmarks BSE Sensex and Nifty 50 ended marginally lower on Tuesday. The broader markets outperformed the benchmark with Midcap and Smallcap indices each gained more than half a percentage point.

Selling pressure witnessed in banking and metal stocks. Buying interest was seen in IT, pharma, FMCG and auto stocks. SBI top laggard among blue-chip stocks, down 1.21 per cent. HDFC, Kotak Mahindra Bank, HDFC Bank, Power Grid Corp and ICICI Bank among other laggards. Tech Mahindra top Sensex gainer, up 2.53 per cent. Bharti Airtel, HCL Technologies, Infosys, Titan Company and Dr Reddy’s Lab among other top performers.

Earlier in Asian Indices, South Korea’s Kospi fell by 0.13 per cent, Japan’s Nikkei 225 index declined by 0.19 per cent. China’s Shanghai Composite also fell by 0.54 per cent.

Market Overview

The BSE Sensex and Nifty50 declined by 0.10 and 0.07 per cent respectively. The Sensex of the Bombay Stock Exchange closed at the 52,250 level while Nifty50 of the National Stock Exchange settled at the 15,740 mark. The Sensex fell 52 points to trade at 52,275 and the Nifty50 declined by 11 points to trade at 15,740.

Nifty50 Index

In the 50-share pack of Nifty50, Tech Mahindra was the biggest gainer, increased by 2.26 per cent. Tata Motors, Bharti Airtel, HCL Technologies, IOC, Infosys, and Britannia were among the other gainers.

On the other hand, Hindalco was the worst performer in the pack, down by 1.89 per cent. Tata Steel, HDFC, Kotak Mahindra Bank, SBI, JSW Steel and HDFC Bank were the other worst performers in the pack.

Small-cap and Mid-cap Indices

The Nifty Midcap-100 index surged 0.60 per cent and the Nifty Smallcap-100 index rose 0.54 per cent. In Nifty Midcap 100, Adani Power gained 19.58 per cent, Quess Corp rose 5.57 per cent, Dhani Services, PI Industries and SRF also surged, while PNB Housing Finance, Bank of India and Rajesh Exports declined. In Nifty Smallcap-100, Sun Pharma Advance gained 10.00 per cent. On the other hand, Indiabulls Real fell 5.16 per cent, Spandana Sphoor, Aegis Logistics, IRB Infra and JK Lakshmi Cement declined.

Sectoral Indices

In NSE sectoral indices, 9 out of 17 sectors surged. Nifty Media was the top performer as it gained 0.86 per cent, Nifty Realty rose 0.85 per cent, followed by Nifty FMCG increased by 0.84 per cent. On the other hand, Nifty PSU Bank, Nifty Metal and Nifty Pvt Bank declined.
