The Sensex and the Nifty today ended marginally down amid negative cues from the Asian equity markets. The Sensex at Bombay Stock Exchange slipped 53 points, or 0.1 per cent, to finish at 52,276. The Nifty at the National Stock Exchange also fell 12 points, or 0.07 per cent to close at 15,740.
The broader market at BSE, on the other hand, logged gains performing better than the Sensex. The Mid-Cap index rose 0.38 per cent and the Small-Cap index climbed 0.93 per cent.
In the Sensex pack, shares of 14 companies climbed while 16 logged losses. Tech Mahindra was the top gainer as it surged two and half percent followed by ITC which climbed 1.9 per cent. HCL gained 1.8 per cent, Infosys rose 1.7 per cent and Titan ended 1.6 per cent up.
In the list of companies which fell, SBI and HDFC, both tumbled 1.2 per cent and Kotak Bank declined 1.1 per cent. HDFC Bank plunged one per cent while Power Grid and ICICI Bank, both fell 0.9 per cent.
In sectoral indices shares of 13 out of 19 sectors climbed. The Telecom sector stocks gained the most as it added 1.7 per cent. IT surged 1.4 per cent and Tech climbed 1.3 per cent. Healthcare and Realty, both rose one per cent.
In the sectors which fell, Metal sector stocks lost the most with a fall of 1.4 per cent. Bankex declined one per cent and the Finance sector slipped 0.7 per cent.
The overall breadth of the BSE trade was positive as shares of 1837 companies gained while 1366 fell. Shares of 141 companies remained unchanged.
