India elected to UN Economic & Social Council for the term 2022-24

Permanent Mission of India to the United Nation on Tuesday announced that India has been elected to the UN Economic and Social Council for the term starting from 2022 till 2024. Economic and Social Council, the 54-member, one of the six key organs of the United Nations is at the center of the UN development system and brings together people and issues to promote collective action for a sustainable world.

Taking to Twitter, India’s Permanent Representative to United Nations, T S Tirumurti, expressed gratitude to all Member States of the UN for their vote of confidence in India for ECOSOC.

“I thank all Member States of the UN for their vote of confidence in India for ECOSOC,” Ambassador Tirumurti said.

The seats to the council depend upon the geographical representation of the member countries. According to the data available on the ECOSOC website, out of 54 seats, fourteen seats have been allocated to the African States, eleven to the Asian States, six to the Eastern European States, ten to Latin America and the Caribbean States, and thirteen to Western European and other States.

Along with India, Denmark, Belgium, Italy, Canada, Croatia, Israel, New Zealand, Greece, Czech Republic, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Côte d’Ivoire, Mauritius, Oman, Tunisia, Peru, Chile among others have been elected to the UN Economic Social Council. India has been chosen in the Asia-Pacific States category.

Currently, India is serving its two-year term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

The Economic and Social Council, one of the key subsidiary body of the United Nations advances the three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social, and environmental. The council serves as the central platform for fostering debate and creative thinking, forging consensus on ways forward, and coordinating efforts to achieve internationally agreed goals. It is also responsible for the follow-up to major UN conferences and summits.

ECOSOC was established by UN Charter in 1945 as one of the six key organs of the United Nations.

India elected to 3 UN ECOSOC bodies:

Earlier in April 2021, India has been elected to three UN Economic and Social Council key bodies which include, Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, the Executive Board of UN Women, and the Executive Board of the World Food Programme.
