Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar launches awareness campaign on single use plastic 2021

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Prakash Javadekar today launched an awareness campaign on single use plastic 2021 on the occasion of World Ocean Day.

Mr Javadekar said, uncollected plastic waste is a major problem. He said, in India two-third was getting collected and one-third was not getting collected. Mr Javadekar said, under the plastic waste management rules, there is a mechanism of collection and recycling of plastic. He said, after the ban of single use plastic in the country, the government had also put a ban on plastic waste import.

It is a significant step in the journey towards reducing pollution caused by the single use of plastic. Considering the adverse impacts of littered plastic waste on both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had given a clarion call in 2018 to phase out Single Use Plastics by 2022. Awareness generation on plastic waste management and reduction in the use of Single Use Plastics is vital in bringing about behavioral change.
