World Environment Day being celebrated across world today; PM Modi to participate in the event this morning


World Environment Day is being Celebrated across the globe today. It is one of the biggest annual events organised by the United Nations to generate awareness about the significance of nature. The United Nations General Assembly established World Environment Day in 1972, which was the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the human environment. It was first observed in 1974. The theme of this year’s World Environment Day is ‘Reimagine. Recreate. Restore.’ as this year marks the beginning of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. Every World Environment Day is hosted by a different country in which official celebrations take place. This year’s host is Pakistan.

President Ram Nath Kovind has said that living in harmony with nature and protecting biodiversity has been at the centre of Indian ethos and culture. In a tweet, he said, On World Environment Day, as humanity fights against COVID-19, we reaffirm our commitment to work with the global community for a sustainable future.

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has called upon everyone to intensify the efforts to protect and restore the degrading ecosystems. In a tweet on World Environment Day, the Vice President called upon everyone to protect the environment today to hand over a liveable planet to the future generations tomorrow.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the World Environment Day event through video conferencing. The event is being jointly organized by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The theme for this year’s event is ‘promotion of biofuels for a better environment’.

During the event, the Prime Minister will release the Report of the Expert Committee on Road Map for ethanol blending in India 2020-2025. To commemorate World Environment Day, Government of India is releasing E-20 Notification directing Oil Companies to sell ethanol blended petrol with percentage of ethanol up to 20 per cent from 1st April 2023 and BIS Specifications for higher ethanol blends E12 and E15. These efforts will facilitate setting up of additional ethanol distillation capacities and will provide timelines for making blended fuel available across the country. This will also help increase consumption of ethanol in the ethanol producing states and the adjoining regions, before 2025. The Prime Minister will launch a Pilot Project of E 100 dispensing stations at three locations in Pune. Mr Modi will also interact with farmers to gain insight on their first hand experience, as enablers under the Ethanol Blended Petrol and Compressed BioGas Programmes.

Home Minister Amit Shah has said that human beings have an  unbreakable bond with nature and conservation of nature and environment is the responsibility and duty of all of us. In a tweet on World Environment Day today, Mr Shah said, the Modi government has done an unprecedented job of bringing awareness in the society with many efforts in this direction. He called upon everyone to contribute by becoming aware of nature conservation on World Environment Day.

On World Environment Day, Union Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar has said that India has a glorious past with Indian ethos of living in harmony and worshipping nature. He said, India is leading the present with thriving wildlife: 70 percent of world’s Tiger, 70 percent of Asiatic lions, 60 percent of leopards with 8 percent of world’s biodiversity.  Mr Javadekar said, today India leads climate action for a green future.
