Skipper KL Rahul scored a combative 91 while Harpreet Brar accounted for three key batsmen as Punjab Kings thumped Royal Challengers Bangalore by 34 runs in an IPL match at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium last night. Put into bat, Punjab were in a spot of bother at one stage but Rahul’s onslaught along with Chris Gayle’s smashing 46 off 24 balls added 80 runs in just 44 balls.
A late 61-run partnership between Rahul and Harpreet Brar, who was unbeaten on 25 off 17 balls, helped Punjab to reach a competitive total. Rahul hit seven fours and five sixes in his 57-ball knock. Brar then came back to capture three vital Royal Challengers’ wickets for 19. Before that, Australian pacer Riley Meredith had dealt the first blow to RCB by sending opener Devdutt Padikkal’s off-stump flying.
Kohli (35) and Rajat Patidar (31) then took their time and added 43 for the second wicket to set the platform for Maxwell and AB de Villiers. However, Brar spoiled all the plans. His victims included Virat Kohli (35), Glenn Maxwell (0) and AB de Villiers (3) as RCB could only reach 145 for eight in 20 overs, thus falling short of 34 runs. The win took Punjab to fifth place with six points, behind Mumbai Indians also at six.
RCB now are at No. 3 position with 10 points. Even though Punjab Kings won the game against RCB, but their batsman Nicholas Pooran has managed a dubious record with his fourth duck at this IPL season when he fell for a three-ball duck to Jamieson last night. Pooran now has a duck without facing a ball, a golden duck, a second-ball duck and a third-ball duck.
