Guidelines issued by Ayush Ministry for self-care during home isolation

The Ministry of Ayush has released guidelines on self-care and home management during COVID-19. The guidelines can be a key element in fighting the second wave of corona that has hit the nation. The guidelines contain essential advisories and information which can help an individual to fight the COVID-19 virus.

Based on leads from Ayurveda and Unani texts, the guidelines for the Covid patients in home isolation is the outcome of extensive research studies, recommendations of the Interdisciplinary Committee which aims to strengthen the country in combating COVID-19 in unprecedented times. Last year, on January 29, the Ministry of Ayush issued an advisory on how to protect oneself from the impact of the infection and how to stay healthy.

Ayurveda Preventive Measures for self-care during COVID-19 Pandemic

In order to maintain optimum health, enhancing the body’s natural defence system (immunity) is essential. The Ministry of Ayush recommends self-care guidelines which include drinking lukewarm water frequently & gargling with warm water with a pinch of turmeric and salt. Using spices like Haldi (Turmeric), Jeera (Cumin), Dhaniya (Coriander), Saunth (Dry ginger) and Lahsun (Garlic) in cooking. The Ministry promoted the daily practice of Yogasana, Pranayama and meditation for at least 30 minutes which can help in recovering from the respiratory issues for the patients dealing with the infection.

In the revised guidelines, the Ministry has also promoted and emphasised the use of ready-made formulation like ‘AyushKwath’ Ayurveda which is a simple admixture of four herbal ingredients.

For the management of asymptomatic and mild cases of Covid during home isolation, the Ayurveda and Unani formulations/measures such as AYUSH-64, Ashwagandha tablets, etc. are proved effective.

Unani medicine based Preventive Measures

Practised primarily in India, Unani medicine involves the use of herbal remedies, dietary practices, and alternative therapies. Just like Ayurveda, Unani is based on the theory of the presence of the elements in the human body and the balance of the elements leads to good health and their imbalance leads to illness.

Unani immunity enhancement measures as per the guidelines issued by the ministry include steam inhalation by adding Arq-e-Ajeeb 2-5 drops once daily. Gargling with the pulp of 10-20 gm Khayar shamber (Cassia fistula) boiled in 100 ml of water. Fumigation (Bakhoor) of the house/working place at frequent intervals with the combination of Sandal (Santalum album) and Kafoor (Cinnamomum camphora).

The present Guidelines and self-care measures provide guidance regarding the treatment of Covid patients. The guidelines are aimed to create awareness regarding home care solutions in order to enhance immunity to combat the impact of the infection.
