The Sensex and the Nifty today climbed more than one percent. The domestic stocks added amid mixed global cues. The Sensex at Bombay Stock Exchange closed above 48,500 mark while the Nifty at National Stock Exchange settled above 14,500 level.
The Sensex gained 661 points, or 1.38 percent, to 48,544. The Nifty also appreciated 194 points, or 1.36 percent, to trade at 14,505.
The broader markets at BSE also surged. The Mid-Cap Index rose 1.46 percent and the Small-Cap added 1.21 percent.
In the Sensex pack, shares of 22 out of 30 companies gained. Mahindra & Mahindra was the top gainer as it added more than eight percent followed by Bajaj Finserv which climbed 7.1 percent. Bajaj Finance surged 4.8 percent, Maruti rose 4.6 percent and IndusInd Bank gained 4.3 percent. On the other hand, TCS and Dr Reddy Lab, both declined more than four percent and Tech Mahindra slipped three and half percent.
In sectoral indices, 16 out of 19 sectors climbed. Auto sector stocks gained the most as added 4.3 percent followed by Metal which surged three and half percent. Finance rose 3.3 percent and Bankex added 3.2 percent. On the other side, IT sector stocks plunged 2.6 percent, Tech declined 2.1 percent and Healthcare stocks fell 0.7 percent.
The overall breadth of the BSE trade was positive as shares of 1923 companies climbed while 949 fell. Shares of 174 companies remained unchanged.
