India’s External Affairs MinisterDr. S. Jaishankar stated that India is in its most difficult phase ofrelationship with China in the last 30 years. In a candid online discussionwith the Lowy Insitute of Australia, the Minister said that maintaining peaceand tranquility on the LAC is the basis of furthering relationship with Chinaand recent Chinese actions has profoundly disturbed it.

Chinese foreign ministryspokesperson Hua Chunying, reacting to External Affairs Minister’s remarks onThursday said that ‘common efforts’ were needed to maintain good relationsbetween China and India.

Speaking on the future of India’srelationship with the USA under Joe Biden, Dr. Jaishankar said rebalancing andmultipolarity are the key words underlining their relationship.

Responding to a question onIndia’s decision to not join the RCEP, Dr. Jaishankar said that issues such asmarket access, subsidies remain unaddressed.

Defence Minister of India, Mr.Rajnath Singh attended virtually the 10th anniversary of the Founding of theASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus) on Wednesday.

The ADMM-Plus is a platform forASEAN and its eight Dialogue Partners, to strengthen security and defencecooperation for peace, stability, and development in the region.

Mr. Singh noted the commonalitybetween India’s Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative IPOI and ASEAN Outlook onIndo-Pacific. He also reiterated India’s support to freedom of navigation andover-flight for all in International waters in accordance with the UNConvention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). He underlined the importance ofmutual trust and confidence based on restraint in activities and actions that mayfurther complicate the situation in the region.

The Prime Minister of India MrNarendra Modi on Thursday said that democracy is the soul of India’s nationallife. Speaking while laying the foundation stone to the new parliament building,Mr. Modi added that democracy is a tradition in India and it has evolved overcenturies.

A Virtual Summit will be heldbetween India’s Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi and President of UzbekistanShavkat Mirziyoyev on Friday.

This will be the first bilateral‘Virtual Summit’ meeting between India and a Central Asian country.

WN-CHINA-RECIPROCAL SANCTIONS

China announced on Thursday thatit would revoke visa exemption treatment for U.S. diplomatic passport holderspaying temporary visits to Hong Kong and Macau after the United States imposedfinancial sanctions and a travel ban on more than a dozen Chinese officials.

Chinese Foreign ministryspokeswoman Hua Chunying told a press briefing in Beijing that China hasdecided to impose reciprocal sanctions against some U.S. officials, members ofCongress, personnel at non-governmental organisations, and their familymembers, over their egregious behavior on Hong Kong. China went on to cautionthe United States not to go further down this “dangerous and wrong path”

WN-BANGLADESH-COVID

India’s envoy to BangladeshVikram Doraiswami paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister of BangladeshSheikh Hasina at her official residence Ganabhaban in Dhaka on Thursday.

Official news agency BSS reportsthat during the meeting, he expressed India’s willingness to contribute inenhancing the service delivery capacity of Bangladeshi professionals for theCOVID 19 vaccine.

High Commissioner VikramDoraiswami emphasised on the need to enhance business to business interactionand that the Chilahati-Haldibari rail link would be inaugurated along with someother projects during the forthcoming virtual summit between Prime Minister Modiand Prime Minister Hasina in December.

India and Nepal have decided toopen flights under a bilateral bubble arrangement. This comes in the wake ofIndia’s Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla’s visit to Nepal in which he highlightedthe importance of people to people connectivity.

The arrangement is being startedwith Indians, Nepalese, OCI/PIO card holders of all nationalities and all validIndian visa holders.

World Human Rights Day is beingcelebrated today with the theme RECOVER BETTER. On the occasion the UnitedNations said that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a disproportionate impact on“vulnerable groups including frontline workers, people with disabilities, olderpeople, women and girls, and minorities,”

In another development, the UNhuman rights experts on Wednesday raised concerns about the scourge of enforceddisappearances and torture in Pakistan. Highlighting the Pakistani government’sfailure to investigate the recent case of human rights defender Idris Khattak,it called on them to uphold its human rights obligations.
